Genetic Testing

Genetic testing is a type diagnostic test that can analyse human DNA, RNA, chromosomes, proteins, or metabolites in order to detect alterations related to a heritable disorder. This in turn can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or can also help determine a person’s future chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder.

Genetic testing has benefits but also has risks and limitations and hence whether to be tested or not is a personal and complex decision.

A genetic counsellor can help an individual by providing information about the pros and cons of the test and discuss the social and emotional aspects of the test results. Genetic Counselling is now an important step for any genetic testing service
